In Monrovia, acts of kindness flourish despite rebel clashes
The last two months saw a period of extreme violence in Liberia as rebel factions and government militia fought on the streets of the capital city, Monrovia. Over 2,500 people sought refuge in nine of the Kingdom Halls of Jehovah’s Witnesses in that city. These refugees, including both Witnesses and non-Witnesses, received food supplies from the local branch office throughout the period of intensified conflict.
Initial shipments of medical supplies were sent promptly by fellow believers in Belgium. Further medical aid and additional food and clothing continue to be sent into Liberia by branches of Jehovah’s Witnesses throughout Europe. This and other disaster relief assistance is funded by the generous donations of fellow Witnesses and other caring individuals around the world.
There has been conflict in Liberia for the past 14 years, and during that time Jehovah’s Witnesses have cared for the needs of one another, as well as of relatives and neighbors. Those in need have received spiritual support and encouragement in addition to food, basic household items and medical care.
There are some 3,500 Jehovah’s Witnesses throughout Liberia, but more than 20,000 others attended their services last year.
